For Christmas Charlie bought me a bunch of supplies to start decorating my own cakes. I really want to be that mom that makes the cool cakes for my children's birthdays, brings snacks to soccer games and just makes every holiday super festive. I guess that is why I make such a good elementary school teacher. I love being creative. I long for my children to leave home and brag to their friends about all the cool things their mom did, and how good great of a cook she was. I know those are silly things to aspire to, but I really just want to be that mom.
So, hear is my first attempt at using fondant. I decided to take pictures of each step along the way. So for those of you who are interested, here they are. It was a lot of fun, and actually a lot easier than I thought it would be.
First, I made two types of cake (vanilla and chocolate) and layered them with cream cheese frosting. They were a little uneven because I forgot to prepare the pan on the chocolate cake, which meant I lost the bottom.

Next I frosted the cake with buttercream frosting in order for the fondant to stick. I had already colored buttercream, so the colors are a little weird.

Then, I rolled out the fondant and draped it over the cakes. There were actually four layers to this cake. Two on top and two on bottom. I draped each one individually and then stacked them on top of each other. We used the steamer to smooth out the sides. Yes, there are a few bumps and seams, but it was much better than I expected it to be.

To decorate the cake I took the left over fondant and divided and dyed half red and half blue. From the blue and red fondant I cut out starts and rolled balls to border the bottom of the cakes layers.
Finally, I used some gum paste to make fireworks on the top of the cake. And here is the final product. I was pretty proud of the job I did. It really was a lot of fun. I am really looking forward to making another cake. I have to think of another fun event and theme for the cake.
